The sixties was a time known as the Social Revolution. There started to be recreational drug use and people started having casual sex. The "swinging sixties" brought about new fashion trends, and outrageous hair styles. There was war, space exploration, assassination, and many inventions.


1960

John F. Kennedy beats Richard Nixon in the election.
The fifty star flag debuts.
FDA approves the first birth control pill.

1961 United States invades Cuba. (Bay of Pigs)
Yuri Gagarim of the USSR becomes the first man in space.
The entire US figure skating team is killed in a plane crash on their
way the the World Championship.

1962
Supreme Court rules against prayer in school.
The Beatles attain their first number one hit “Love Me Do”.
First use of silicone breast implants.

1963
Martin Luther King Jr. gives “I have a dream” speech.
John F. Kennedy is assassinated.
Lava lamps come out.

1964
Sony introduces the first VCR.
Poll tax becomes illegal.
D.C. Residents can vote in Presidential election for the first time.

1965
Medicare is created.
Malcolm X is shot in New York.
Pope Paul VI becomes the first pope to visit the United States.

1966
Miranda Rights are introduced in the United States.
Pampers comes out with the first disposable diaper.
Cigarettes must carry a health warning.

1967
The first Rolling Stones magazine is published.
Muhammad Ali is stripped of his heavyweight title for refusing induction into the US Army.
The Green Bay Packers win the first Super Bowl.

1968
Martin Luther King Jr. is assassinated.
Emergency 911 Telephone service is started.
First Big Mac is sold for $0.49.

1969
Neil Armstrong becomes the first man on the moon.
Richard Nixon becomes the president of the United States.
The first transplant of the human eye is performed
