The World Around Us in the 1960'S

Berlin Wall- consrtuction begins in 1961 by the Soviet Union in attempt to block out the allied powers aid to the citizens of west Berlin. The Berlin Wall became a symbol of the cold war and communisim.

Bay of Pigs Invasion- failed attempt by the U.S. government to overthrow the communist government of Fidel Castro.

Cuban Missle Crisis- The Soviet Union had supplied Cuba with nuclear weapons about 90 miles off the coast of Flordia, casuing the U.S. to assemble radar sites near the coast of cuba and raising all U.S. forces on DEFCON 2, for the first reported time in history. The U.S. then established a naval blockade of cuba and searched all ships who passed through. After negoations from both sides, the Sovites agreed to remove the missle sites from cuba, while the U.S. secretly agreed to remove missle sites from Turkey and sotuhern Italy. One of the major Cold War incidents that was close to nuclear war.

Vice Presidents-1961-63 Johnson, 1965-96 Hurbert Humphrey, Spiro Agnew 1969-73.

Mauritania, Madagascar, Republic of the Congo, Somalia, Benin, Upper Volta, Cote D'lvoire, Chad, Central African Republic, Gabon, Nigeria Niger, and Mali all gained independence in 1960. 1960 is known as the year of Africa.
Soviet missle shoots down an american spy plane over cuba, causing the "U2 incident", pilot Francis Gary Powers is captured.
1960, Soviet MiG fighter shoots down an american RB-47, two United States Air Force officers survive and are imprisioned in moscow, released a year later.

On July 20, 1969 Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the moon. He said it was, "One small step for man, one giant step for mankind." America became the first country to have a person on the moon with the NASA Apollp 11 mission.
